Am I the only person who detests it? When it was used for the kids, yeah, that was fine. When it was used for Adults, it sounded ridiculous and made some of the screams border line ear rape. It also contrasts heinously with some people, namely Bardock and Adult Gohan who sound like they were kicked in the balls. There is no excuse for Bardock and Gohan, as they are not like Goku with "inner youth" So, I know I'm going to get hell and high water for this, but Goku's Japanese Voice is the main reason I watch DBZ in English |

To me, Nozawa's performance with Goku is the same problem I have when English Dubbers try to voice very young people and give them high pitched voices that clearly make them sound forced and can't come to the same area of expertise that the Japanese Seiyuu's do. It's also the same problem I have with Linda Young and Freeza, although the personality might fit the overall texture of the voice does not. Goku is in spirit, personality and emotion (especially later down the road) not so much childish but ignorant. He does a few things out of the blue and is clearly lacking on some knowledge but when you get something he does know about, like fighting, ki, etc he knows that stuff. He comes off almost as a foreigner in a different country and doesn't know the customs of that place and may act in ignorance of that. But in the end, he is still an adult, a very old and in relative point, mature adult and that's where Sean Schemmel succeeds. Sean can easily make Goku into a character this happy go lucky, childish and ignorant of his surroundings and yet at the same time give us a character who is powerful, strong and is clearly mature in a sense that we see Goku. Goku's not a kid anymore nor is he as dumb as his abridged counterpart (of course uses Sean's voice clarity) but he's a guy who while ignorant on things, has learned a lot throughout his time. He's grown smarter, learned more and isn't the same monkey boy he was 30-40 some years ago. He has grown and we expect that in the character. This is especially bad for Bardock. At the very least Goku and Gohan had very childish natures to them. Bardock does not, he is an extremely serious, border on blood thirsty I dare say of a character and his attitude and personality does not match with the high pitched child-like nature that is given to him. |

Your not the only one, but I prefer her to Sean Schemmel, and Sean Schemmel himself says she is better. Masako is better. PROVED! Don't take this too seriously....

She's amazing IMHO. I don't mind the voice as honestly some men DO sound like that and they kick some serious a***(Ken Shamrock!). However I did once make a video about what if the JPN Voice gave Goku different pitch. Here check it out and give me your opinions. I honestly don't know how people can dislike it unless Nozawa in Kai or Battle of Gods(She was off her game IMO). Sure it's different. But it makes Goku stands out. It made Gohan stand out(Honestly I can easily tell the difference) |

I agree and that is also why I never watch Japanese versions. But it is their culture and style so I try not to speak badly about this anymore. |

I'm a kid and hate it, lol imagine me as an Adult. I think he's voice is off, mainly because I first watched the english Funi dub, and I prefer Sean's voice a hundred fold over he's japanese counterpart. The screams and voices he's making while fighting are awful if you ask me, in english I find them amazing. DBZ english dub voices are much better than the original ones IMHO. |

Dragon Ball was originally intended to be a gag series, so the voice fits perfect for that type of series. The tone changed later on, and the voice never was. |

I prefer his English voice, but I don't hate the Japanese one. I think Sir Brofist is right with the child thing, but I think I'd go further to say Goku is childish. I think that's why Sean's voice works so well, because it implies innocence, childishness and nativity within an adult instead of just trying to portray a child in an adults body. A think a somewhat derpy vacant voice is necessary for Goku, and whilst both the Japanese and English conveys that in times of peace, during the fights it's lacking. The Japanese just becomes intolerable noise whilst the English too serious - though I'd argue still a little vacant. I find the quietness and the audio in the Japanese impossible to tolerate, however. Just something about it presses the wrong buttons for me. I'd love to know what the Japanese fans think, especially those who can speak English. Because is this a cultural problem and we're missing the point, or? This is why I suggest Kai to new fans wanting to watch the series. If any of the admittedly eccentric Japanese voices end up being a turn-off for them, then at least they can appreciate a faithful version of the story while watching in English.

I'm not sure if this was just Dragon Ball in general or something back in the 80's early 90s, but Japanese animes now a days are definitely more, expressive for lack of better of word. What I mean is, its not nearly as silent as it was then. I know watching the original Dragon Ball and Z in Japanese where many of the scenes are just dialogue with no music to it except for in like intense action scnes (and sometimes not even then.) You look at Kai and that changes, while it may or may not be on the same level as the original Funimation (Which basically played music every time someone blinked their eyes) it definitely showed a huge change from the past. There's the change of music to both fit that sort of new age style we live in, though of course not techno babble that was Bruce Faulconer but more important the music was more expressive and used more. Which honestly is definitely helpful because music helps to bring a scene alive and gives it meaning. Now a days, animes are much more distinctive, not only is the animation more fluid and better throughout time, but the music, sounds and frankly even the Japanese Seiyuu's have all improve greatly over time whether through experience and/or through a change in the way voice acting has been made in the same way many English VA's have improved drastically from their time. |

In fairness, now you mention it, there was a surge of quietly sinister film and animation in the west at that time also. Especially in Europe. Easy to forget how old DBZ is.

Yes, both are great. I started with Sean so you'd think that he's the voice I hear when I think of Goku, and you'd be half right. The funny thing is, after getting used to the Japanese voice for Goku, both the English and Japanese voices will pop into my head. It's very rare that I find a character in really any series where I'm like yes, both English and Japanese fit. Edited by ThePrinceOfSaiyans, Jan 23 2014, 12:20 AM.

I used to dislike Goku's Japanese voice. But now after watching DBZ in Japanese for a change, I actually don't mind it anymore. |
